How do I install Writer?
Download the DMG from Writer's download page, open it, and drag Writer into Applications. Launch it from Applications. The Apple Silicon alpha requires macOS 13.5 or later and is not Developer ID signed or Apple-notarized. If macOS blocks this trusted download, use the installation help on the download page. Intel Mac and Windows downloads are not available.
How do I start my first document?
Open Writer and use the document controls to create a file in a folder you choose, or open an existing document. Start with a few notes or a draft. You do not need to connect an AI provider to write, edit, and save locally.
Where do I find the latest release?
Use Writer's download page to check alpha availability, supported Mac architecture, version, and SHA-256 checksum. If no download is listed, the installer is still being prepared. The page explains the alpha's signing status and macOS installation steps. Only install a copy from a source you trust.
Documents & export
Where are my documents saved?
Writer saves documents locally in the folder you select. The app supports creating, opening, and autosaving local documents. Keep a backup of that folder using your preferred backup tool.
Can I work with Microsoft Word documents?
Yes. Writer imports and exports supported DOCX content, including headings, paragraphs, lists, basic tables, and raster images. It does not preserve every Word layout feature. Headers, footers, comments, and Word tracked changes do not round-trip. Review the exported file before delivery. DOCX imports are limited to 32 MB.
Can I keep my writing in Markdown?
Yes. Markdown is a native document format in Writer. You can keep your writing in ordinary files and open those files with other compatible tools.
Canvas & references
What is the canvas for?
The canvas gives you space beside the document to work on alternatives and individual sections. Move selected material into a frame, develop it there, and bring a result back when you choose. Transferring text alone does not start an AI request.
Which reference files can I add?
Document references support PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, CSV, and JSON. A context can hold up to 12 files, with a 10 MB limit per file. Writer keeps local reference copies with the document context. Adding a file does not automatically send it to an AI provider.
What if a reference cannot be read?
Review the extraction preview and retry if extraction fails. Image-only PDFs may not contain usable text. Tables, CSV files, and reference extraction do not by themselves mean the app has checked facts or verified an analysis.
Website Editor & publishing
How do I turn on Website Editor?
Open Settings with the gear or Command-comma, then turn on Website Editor. Website appears beside Write and Augmented. Open it to create a page or import a URL or HTML file. Website Editor is off by default; turning it off keeps your saved pages and connection.
Can I edit a website page in its original design?
Design shows a local snapshot with supported styles and captured assets. Edit mapped headings, paragraphs, and list text in place, or open View and choose Text for the same draft. Use desktop, tablet, or mobile widths to review it. Imported pages are static snapshots: scripts and form submissions are disabled, and dynamic content or some layout details may differ. Importing or editing a page does not change the live site.
Where do I edit the SEO title and sharing image?
Open Page actions (the three-dot button), then Page information. Edit the title, description, canonical URL, robots directives, and Open Graph fields, including the sharing image URL and alt text. Save page details stores changes locally. Search and sharing previews are estimates; search engines and sharing services may display them differently.
How do Review and Canvas work for a website?
Review holds Content and SEO suggestions that you explicitly request with a configured AI connection. Inspect a suggestion before applying or dismissing it. Canvas gives you room to work on a selected page section and return supported changes to the draft. Sending a section to Canvas does not start an AI request. Preview and undo help you check changes before keeping them.
Can I open pages and brand references from Robynn?
Yes, when the connection is enabled for your workspace. Choose Open from Robynn and connect through the browser, then select a site and ready page. Choose which brand references to use; connecting alone does not start AI analysis or share all your local files. Imported pages become local drafts. Availability depends on your workspace rollout and supported page content.
Can I publish an article from Writer?
Connected article publishing is included with Robynn Growth and requires an enabled Robynn workspace and supported WordPress site. Prepare a private article draft, inspect its preview, request review, then use the separate Publish action when approved. Writer distinguishes publication from verified delivery. This workflow starts from your writing document and does not publish arbitrary Website Editor HTML.
AI, skills & extensions
How does AI work in Writer?
Connect a supported provider in Writer's settings, then choose when to make a request. The provider, account method, and model determine availability and cost. Basic local writing remains usable without an AI connection. Review AI output and its sources before using it.
Can I connect a Google Gemini account instead of an API key?
Settings → Google Gemini has a separate Code Assist account connection intended for eligible organization accounts. Choose Sign in with Google, add a Cloud project if your organization requires one, then load and select an offered model. A saved sign-in does not guarantee model access. Google controls account eligibility and quota. The API-key connection remains separate; Writer does not silently switch between them. The full user guide links to Google's current account guidance.
What happens if my Google account model is unavailable?
Writer keeps the selected model visibly unavailable rather than replacing it. Use Load models or Refresh to retry model discovery, or Reconnect Google if authentication is needed. A connection error does not fall back to an API key. Image generation is unavailable through Writer's Code Assist account route. If a frame cannot safely resume, keep its local history and start a new frame with the material you choose.
What are custom skills?
Skills are writing instructions you install as Markdown files. They can describe your editing preferences, structure, or house style. Writer applies loaded skill instructions to subsequent AI requests. A skill is guidance for the model, not a guarantee that it will follow every instruction.
What should I know before installing an extension?
Extensions are executable code that can add tools to Writer. Install them only from authors you trust. The current extension system is not sandboxed. Follow the extension's installation instructions and restart Writer after adding it.
Privacy & plans
Can I write offline?
Yes. Local writing, editing, and saving do not require an AI service. Cloud AI requests and other network-dependent tools need a connection. Your model provider's privacy and retention terms apply to material included in a request.
Are my documents automatically shared with Robynn?
No. Connecting Robynn is an explicit action. You choose the page, brand references, company workflow, or article revision used in that workflow. Preparing a connected article sends that selected draft and its included images for private review. Installing Writer or connecting a workspace does not upload every document in your folder.
What does Robynn Growth include?
Writer is free. Robynn Growth is $129 per month with 300 credits every month and all Robynn features enabled. Connect your Robynn workspace to use brand context, company knowledge, website pages, saved SEO / GEO audits, company article workflows, and article preview, review, and supported WordPress publishing. Your local Writer files remain available without a Growth subscription.
